The University Grants Commission (UGC) conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine eligibility for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. The Test is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.
Qualifying Criterion as of October 2012:
Only those with an aggregate of 65% for the three papers, which means 227.5 marks, will make the cut. For the SC/ST category, the new qualification cut-off will be 192.5 and for OBC candidates, it is 210 marks.
The UGC NET exam is conducted twice a year. From June 2012 onwards, all the three papers will be Objective.

The important dates for University Grants Commission (UGC) – National Eligibility Test (NET) December 2012 are as below.
- Application Submission End Date : Friday; November 16, 2012
- Last date for receiving the documents* at the Coordinating University : Thursday; November 22, 2012
- Examination Date : Sunday; Dec. 30, 2012
Note *: The print out of online Application Form (one copy) and Attendance Slip (one copy) at the respective Coordinating University opted by the candidate with fee receipt & category certificate(s).
