Basant Panchmi or Vasant Panchmi or Shri Panchmi is an Indian festival that celebrates the onset of spring (Basant) season. The Basant Panchmi date of the year 2012 is 28th January 2012.
It is primarily a festival dedicated to The Mother Nature. Hindus also worship Goddess Saraswati (the Goddess of knowledge, music, and art) on Basant Panchmi and wear yellow clothes, eat yellow food and sweets. Traditionally, it is believed that Indian children were taught to write their first words on this day. Some people also believe that doing "Pitra-tarpan" or ancestral worship on Basant Panchmi is also very auspicious.

Basant Panchmi that marks the end of winters in India, is one of the first festivals of the Year and is celebrated all over India. People wear yellow clothes, offer yellow flowers in worship, eat yellow food and sweets and also, put a yellow, turmeric or sometimes, kesar tilak on their foreheads. At home, kesar halva, or sweet yellow rice, are cooked.
Kite flying, a popular sport in India, is associated with the Basant Panchami day. It is a day for young crowd - no routine work, no studies, only merry making.
